WWF Royal Rumble 1992: Every Match Ranked From Worst To Best

WWF had a great start to 1992 with a solid Royal Rumble PPV. The main event with Ric Flair winning the WWF title was the best Rumble match ever in my opinion. However, that was not the only match which was part of the show. In fact, the show had 4 matches other than the rumble, including 2 title matches. Let’s rank every match from the show and see how good the matches were, starting with the worst.

5. The Bushwhackers vs. The Beverly Brothers

The Bushwhackers were very popular in the WWF but their matches absolutely sucked. I don’t even want to talk about this match as it was so bad. It’s legitimately the worst wrestling match I have ever seen in my life. The match lasted for about 15 minutes but felt like an eternity. This was supposed to be a comedy match but there was hardly anything funny. The best part of the match was when it ended because it meant the torture ended. If you have never seen this match, please stay away from this as far as possible and never think about watching this. Ugh…. (DUD)

4. The Legion Of Doom vs. The Natural Disasters – WWF Tag Team Championship

This match took place just after the Beverlys vs. Bushwhackers match and it was certainly much better. However, it doesn’t say much and this match wasn’t exactly great either. It was a decent battle between two solid tag teams. The finish was a count-out which is never good for a PPV match, especially when it’s a title match. Still, it’s a watchable contest and it didn’t drag much. (*1/2)

3. The Mountie vs. Roddy Piper – WWF Intercontinental Championship

If you want an example of an intelligently worked short match, this is a perfect example. Originally, it was supposed to be Bret Hart vs. The Mountie but Bret lost the title to The Mountie at a house show just before Royal Rumble and it was told Bret was sick due to which Roddy challenged for the title at the Rumble PPV. Coming back to the match, it was only a 5 minute contest but it was highly entertaining. The crowd was red hot during the match which elevated the match quality. Roddy won the title which is definitely one of the best title wins ever in WWF. (**)

2. The New Foundation vs. The Orient Express

This was the opening match of the event and it gave the show a great start. While watching the show, I didn’t expect this match to get much time but the match lasted for more than 17 minutes and was in fact, the longest match after the rumble itself. All the wrestlers did a good job in the match especially Owen Hart. The contest was very exciting with many fun moments. The hot tag sequence in particular was quite good. Solid opener. (***)

1. 30-man Royal Rumble match for the vacant WWF Championship

Finally, let’s talk about the best match of Royal Rumble 1992, the main event which was the royal rumble match itself. Before this rumble, all the previous rumble winners didn’t get any prize but this match had the WWF title on the line. This rumble is known for having a very star-studded roster. A rumble match is very tough to book so obviously this had a few flaws here and there, but it was almost perfect. Ric Flair entered the match at #3 and went on to win the whole thing lasting more than an hour. This legendary performance alongside Bobby Heenan’s top notch commentary elevated this match on a whole new level. There have been several great rumbles after this, but none have been able to match the greatness of this match. (****3/4)

And that’s all for today’s post, thank you all for reading. Stay tuned for the next part of this series where we will take a look at WrestleMania VIII. Have a nice day!
